Xi’an Shiyou University (XSYU) has maintained a distinguished trajectory in geoscience education since establishing its Petroleum Geology program in 1958. The School’s development progressed systematically, with the formation of the Geology Teaching & Research Division under the Oilfield Development Department in 1985. By 1996, XSYU had established its university-level Oil & Gas Geology Research Institute. The undergraduate program in Resource Exploration Engineering resumed enrollment in 2001, which paved the way for the establishment of the Resource Engineering Department in 2003. Subsequent institutional advancement included the founding of the School of Oil & Gas Resources in 2006, culminating in its official reorganization as the School of Geoscience and Engineering in 2012.

II Discipline construction
The School is authorized to confer doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of “Geological Resources and Geological Engineering”, with four specialized second-level disciplines: Mineral Exploration and Prospecting, Geophysical Exploration and Information Technology, Geological Engineering, and Oil & Gas Field Development Geology. It also maintains two first-level master’s degree authorizations in Geological Resources and Geological Engineering and Geology, covering second-level disciplines including Mineral Resource Prospecting and Exploration, Unconventional Oil & Gas Geology and Exploration, Oil & Gas Field Development Geology, Geodetection and Information Technology, Geological Engineering, Mineralogy-Petrology-Mineralogy, Structural Geology, and Geochemistry. Additionally, the School grants professional master’s degrees in Resources and Environment Engineering.
The School currently offers four engineering bachelor’s degree programs, including Resource Exploration Engineering, Exploration Technology and Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geo-information Science and Technology, and one science bachelor’s program in Geology. Among these, the Resource Exploration Engineering program is a national-level characteristic program, as well as a characteristic program and first-class program in Shaanxi Province. In 2020, the Exploration Technology and Engineering program was approved as a first-class program in Shaanxi Province.
III Teaching staff
The School boasts a distinguished academic team of 127 faculty and staff members, including 110 full-time teachers. Among them are 64 professors and associate professors, featuring one Level-II Professor and one Level-III Professor. More than 97% of the faculty members hold doctoral degrees. Our faculty boasts several distinguished members who have earned significant honors. There is one expert received government allowances of the State Council, another selected for the prestigious national “New Century National Hundred, Thousand and Ten-Thousand Talent Project,” and one recognized as a “Distinguished Contributor” by Shaanxi Province. Furthermore, faculty members have been chosen for key Shaanxi Province talent programs, containing the “Three-Five Talents Program”, the “Shaanxi’s High-Level Talent” and the “Sanqin Talent Recruitment Initiatives”, along with three provincial-level distinguished educators.
