Material Science and Engineering College of Xi'an Shiyou University was formerly known as the Welding Technology and Equipment Teaching and Research Department, which was established in 1985 at Xi'an Petroleum Institute. This department is recognized as the earliest teaching and research unit for welding professions among China's oil and gas engineering institutions. In response to the developmental needs of the petrochemical industry and the university's commitment to establishing a multi-disciplinary teaching and research-oriented institution, it was separated from the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and Materials Science of Xi'an Shiyou University in 2003, and was subsequently renamed the Materials Science and Engineering College in 2006. After three decades of growth and development, the college has evolved into a second-level college with substantial overall strength and a high quality of education and employment, exerting considerable influence both within the oil and petrochemical sectors and in Northwest China.

The Faculty Team and Scholarly Advancement

The academy currently employs 82 faculty members, comprising 45 associate professors and full professors, as well as 58 doctoral supervisors. Over 98% of the faculty hold doctoral degrees.Among the faculty, there are 14 individuals recognized as provincial and ministerial leading talents, Sanqin talents, and technology stars.The college is proud to have established a provincial teaching team for “Welding Technology and Engineering,” along with a provincial key innovation research team focused on “Petroleum Special Pipe Corrosion and Protection.” Furthermore, it is home to six school-level youth innovation teams. The college is home to five esteemed academic research institutions, including the Shaanxi Province Welded Steel Pipe Engineering Technology Research Center, the Xi'an Key Laboratory for High-Performance Oil and Gasfield Materials, the Institute of Welding Technology, the Institute of Corrosion and Protection, and the Material Testing and Evaluation Institute. Additionally, it houses the Shaanxi Province Key Technological Innovation Team -“Petroleum Pipeline Corrosion and Protection.”

The college possesses unique research characteristics, currently establishing seven prominent research directions: control of material microstructure and properties, material forming technology and control, mechanisms and laws of material fracture, corrosion and protection of metals, advanced materials computation and design, materials surface engineering and applications, as well as pipeline inspection and safety evaluation.Over the past five years, the college has undertaken and participated in 11 national-level projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation and the National Science and Technology Support Program, in addition to more than 70 provincial and ministerial-level research projects, with total research funding exceeding 69 million yuan. The institution has been honored with 4 provincial and ministerial-level awards for scientific and technological progress; it has published 38 textbooks and monographs; it has been granted over 80 national invention patents; and it has produced more than 520

The college currently has more than 1,500 full-time students and offers a master’s degree program in Materials Science and Engineering, a first-level discipline. This discipline includes three second-level disciplines: Materials Processing Engineering, Materials Science, and Materials Physics and Chemistry. This discipline is a crucial field of study in Shaanxi Province; it is authorized to confer master's degrees in Materials and Chemical Engineering.The discipline is supported by four teaching departments: the Department of Welding Technology and Engineering, the Department of Materials Forming and Control, the Department of Metallic Materials, and the Department of Materials Physics. In addition, the college houses the Materials Science and Engineering Experimental Teaching Center, a provincial-level demonstration center for experimental teaching that provides high-quality resources for hands-on learning and research.The college has collaboratively established “Industry-Academia-Research Bases” in partnership with several enterprises, leveraging the development of these bases to create new platforms for students' production internships, academic competitions, and innovative research and development initiatives.
