Amid the vast cosmic sea of shining stars,we embrace an appointment with the galaxy.On the occasion of its 75th anniversary,XSYUhas received a giftfrom the Distant Cosmos.As announced by the International Astronomical Union (IAU),the asteroid with the permanent international number 513340has been officially named after Xi’an Shiyou University, designated as Star “Xianshiyou”.
According to theofficial announcements, Star “Xianshiyou”was first discovered by the Purple Mountain Observatory, Chinese Academy of Scienceson August 13, 2007.From now on, across the boundless orbit of the universe,theStarwill shine eternallywith thename of“Xianshiyou”.

Since ancient times, humanity has long yearned for the boundless starry sky, regarding the twinkling stars as a spiritual beacon for exploring the unknown and pursuing ideals. Today, this faint cosmic light engraved with the mark of Xi’an Shiyou University travels across hundreds of millions of light-years to arrive on Earth. It is not only the most romantic gift bestowed by the firmament upon all members of XSYU, but also an eternal testament to the university’s 75 years of development in western China and dedication to fostering talents through education.
Asteroid naming features supreme solemnity, uniqueness and permanent immutability, and being granted such an honor is internationally recognized distinction. Over more than seven decades ofdevelopment,ouruniversity has always closely aligned with national energy strategic needs, yielding remarkable achievements and steady progress ineducation, scientific research breakthroughs and public services. This stellar honor fully recognizes the university’s educational accomplishments and serves as a profound inspiration for its future journey of forging ahead.
In July 2025, Chang Jiang, Secretary of the University Party Committee, led officials from the Party Committee Office (University President’s Office), the Research Affairs Department and the Graduate School to the Purple Mountain Observatory, CAS, to advance the asteroid naming initiative. Following thorough deliberation and meticulous preparation, the university formally submitted the proposal to name an asteroid after Xi’an Shiyou University.
During the forum with the Purple Mountain Observatory, both sides conducted in-depth exchanges on deepening bilateral cooperation, highlighting the university’s historical heritage and cultural ethos, sparking young students’ interest in space exploration, and strengthening the sense of school pride among faculty, students and alumni.
