Joyous Announcement: Distinguished Alumnus and Dean of the Institute for Future Carbon Neutrality Technologies Wang Xiangzeng Elected as Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering

On November 21, the results of the 2025 Member Election of the Chinese Academy of Engineering were officially announced, with a total of 71 new members elected. Among them, 12 new members were inducted into the Department of Energy and Mining Engineering, including Wang Xiangzeng—an alumnus of the Class of 1985 and Dean of the Institute for Future Carbon Neutrality Technologies ofXSYU.

Prof.Dr. Wang Xiangzeng is aProfessor-level senior engineer and doctoral supervisor. He currently serves as Chief Scientist and Chief Geologist of Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum (Group) Co., Ltd., as well as Dean of the Institute for Future Carbon Neutrality Technologies atXSYU. He has long been engaged in theoretical research, technological breakthroughs and engineering practice in the development of low-permeability and tight oil and gas reservoirs. He has presided over 9 national-level projects and research topics, including the National Science and Technology Support Program, National Science and Technology Major Project, 863 Program and National Key R&D Program. He established the theory of dual-drive synergistic development and the technology of controlled-rate permeability-enhancing water injection for low-permeability tight oil reservoirs, overcoming the worldwide challenge of difficult recovery of crude oil from matrix pores in such reservoirs. He put forward a new geological understanding of sand-controlled reservoir formation in marine-continental interactive environments and founded the three-dimensional development technology of mixed well pattern for complex superimposed gas reservoirs, resolving the technical bottleneck of low reserve recovery efficiency in tight gas reservoirs and supporting the large-scale and efficient development of the Yan’an Gas Field. He also pioneered the integrated technology of CO₂ fracturing, oil displacement and storage, addressing the engineering challenge of significantly improving oil recovery through immiscible displacement in low-permeability tight oil reservoirs, and led the construction of China’s first fully integrated CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage) demonstration project certified by the CSLF (China Sustainable Livelihoods Foundation).

He has won 3 Second Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 10 Provincial and Ministerial-level Special Prizes and First Prizes. He has also received honors including the HeLiang &HeLiPrize, Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award, National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award, Li Siguang Geological Science Award, Sun Yueqi Energy Science and Technology Award, Distinguished Member Award of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and National May 1st Labor Medal. He was selected into the National Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project.
