College of Material Science and Engineering

The College of Material Science and Engineering, founded in April, 2006, was formerly known as the Teaching and Research Section of Welding Process and Equipment, which was set up in 1985 and was the first welding research and teaching section among all petroleum universities in China. The college consists of Departments of Material Processing Engineering, Material Physics and Metal Material Engineering. It provides four bachelor degree programs for undergraduates: Material Molding and Control Engineering (a provincial “Feature Major”), Material Physics, Metal Material Engineering, and Welding Technology and Engineering. It claims a level-one discipline for postgraduate studies – Material Science and Engineering, which includes three sub-disciplines: Material Processing Engineering, Material science, Material Physics and Chemistry. Material Processing Engineering is a provincial “Key Discipline”. In addition, it offers one discipline for students pursuing a master degree in engineering.

Currently, the college has a teaching staff of 42 members, among whom are 7 professors, 7 associate professors, and 3 senior engineers. 16 teachers are doctoral degree holders. One doctorate tutor is entitled as a provincial and ministerial “Outstanding Contribution Expert”. One professor is entitled by the State Education Commission as a “New Century’s Talent”. The college has built up a professionalized teaching and research staff that is well-structured in degrees, ages and professional titles.

The college provides good conditions for experimental teaching and scientific research. It claims a provincial Pipe Welding Engineering Technology Research Center, a Material Processing Engineering Lab (university key lab), a Welding Training Center and a provincial Model Experimental Teaching Center.

After years of construction and development, it has developed its distinctive advantages in the field of petroleum engineering materials. It is taking the lead in the research of transmission tubular materials, oil well tubular materials and petroleum and ore yard mechanical materials and has made significant achievements. It has established a number of relatively steady and influential disciplines: Material Structure and Performance Control, Material Molding Technology and Control, Material Fracture Mechanisms and Rules, and Metal Corrosion Protection and Surface Modification. In recent years, it has undertaken or participated in over 200 research projects funded by “National 863 Program”, State Natural Science Funds” and “Provincial Natural Science Funds”, or commissioned by enterprises. So far, it has 500 papers published in national and international academic journals and periodicals and won national orprovincial Prizes for Progress in Science and TechnologyThe college has earned a good reputation in petroleum industries and organizations.

The college devotes to cultivating advanced and application-oriented talents in the field of materials science to serve the development of petroleum, petrochemical and energy industries. It puts great emphasis on the construction of a reasonable knowledge structure and practical abilities in order to cultivate innovative talents with a good command of knowledge about materials, fundamentals and engineering technology, and are capable of developing new materials, new products and new processes.

The graduates can pursue a career of teaching and research in colleges or universities, or conduct fundamental research, application research and development of engineering material and processing technology, or work on material processing and preparation, material selection and application, material quality and performance test, surface engineering, and development of advanced materials in the fields of petroleum, petrochemical industry, mechanics, metallurgy, chemical engineering, energy, electronics, transportation, textiles, military industry, etc.

Material Molding and Control Engineering  ( 4-year undergraduate Program )

The major aims at cultivating advanced and application-oriented talents who are specialized in Materials Science, Electric Engineering and Electronics, Mechanics, Dynamics, Automation Control and Material Molding Process, and who are qualified for teaching, research, technical development and production management. The students are required to learn the basic theories of Materials Science, Material Molding Process Designing, Molding Process Control and Equipment.

Key Courses: Engineering Mechanics, Physical Chemistry, Mechanical Design Basics, Electric Engineering and Electronics, PC Principles and Interface Technology, Materials Science Basics, Engineering Material Dynamic Performance, Material Molding Principles and Process, Material Molding Measuring and Control.

Welding Technology and Engineering  ( 4-year undergraduate Program )

This major aims to cultivate advanced and application-oriented talents who are specialized in Materials Science, Electric Engineering, Electronics, Mechanics, Dynamics, Automation Control and Welding Technology and are qualified for scientific research, technical development, designing and manufacturing, production management in the field of welding technology and engineering. The students are required to learn the basic theories of Materials Science, Material Welding Basics and Weldability, Welding Process and Method, Welding Structural Mechanics and Welding Equipment.

Key Courses: Engineering Mechanics, Physical Chemistry, Mechanical Design Basics, Electric Engineering and Electronic Technology, PC Principles and Interface Technology, Materials Science Basics, Engineering Material Dynamic Performance, Welding Principles, Welding Method and Equipment, Metal Weldability, Welding Structure, Advanced Material Coupling, Arc Welding Power and Welding Engineering Basics.

Material Physics  ( 4-year undergraduate Program )

This major aims to cultivate advanced and application-oriented talents who are specialized in materials science and physics, and who are capable of Material Preparation, Process Analysis, and New Material Structural Design and Performance Studies. The graduates will be engaged in material studies, new material development, education, production and operational management in the field of materials science and engineering and the relevant fields.

Metal Material Engineering  ( 4-year undergraduate Program )

This major aims to cultivate advanced and application-oriented talents who have mastered the fundamentals of metal materials science and engineering, and who will be engaged in the scientific research, technical development, production and operational management in the fields of material structure and performance analysis, metal material heat treatment, metal material corrosion and protection, and engineering structural fracture and control. The graduates will be able to teach in colleges or universities, conduct material development in research organizations or perform product and process design and manufacturing in enterprises. They can also perform quality tests, technical supervision and production management in trading organizations or scientific institutions.
